2014-LCC-Cross-Country-Team-SmallerThe Girls Cross Country team looks forward to a successful 2014 season with a strong group of returners along with many new teammates! This deep team of talented runners comes with a lot of competition for seven varsity spots, but the girls support each other and focus on the team goals. Through their hard-work and dedication during summer training and into the season, they hope to carry on the LCC legacy as both League and CIF cross country champions, and then go on to place in the top 5 at State. These girls will work together as a team to each grow physically and mentally stronger as the season progresses. Let’s go Lady Mavs! [by Senior Molly Mineiro]

The Maverick boys cross country team returns 3 of its top 7 runners from last year’s squad, which placed 2nd at CIF and placed 14th at the state meet. Led by seniors Steven Terris, Eric Lawver, and Alex Merder, this year’s team is poised to compete for its second ever CIF title, thanks largely to the team’s excellent depth. Juniors Joel Sandoval and Bryan Johnson as well as sophomore Jarod Lyles will be looking to make a big impact this season. They are joined by newcomers Isaac Diaz (Jr.) and Gavin Aleshire (Fr.), atop a group of over a dozen runners in contention for the top 7 spots. All will need to be at their best in November if the Mavericks wish to bring home another CIF title. [by seniors Eric Lawver and Alex Merder]

LCC Varsity at PracticeThe 2014 La Costa Canyon Mavericks are looking to be the best we’ve seen in years. The Mavericks are led by senior quarterback Duke Mackle who has a very consistent arm and a great football intelligence. This years Maverick offensive line is one of the biggest in the county with Elijah Wofford, Ryan Becker, and Bruce Schram all returning this year as seniors. The Mavericks run game will be huge this year with returning running back Cade Jackson (Jr.) who rushed for over 600 yards last season. The Mavericks also have two sophomores who will play big roles on offense, Tanner Clark (WR, QB) and Zach Goodkin (RB).

This years Maverick defense is looking the most solid it’s been in years. Up front is AJ Hofstetter and James Vanderpool who excelled as juniors last year, both with over 30 tackles. Behind the front line is Chandler Wachholtz who had 64 tackles last season and led the team in sacks and tackles for loss. Colin Nishioka is a returning LB/S who had over 45 tackles last year and is expected to play a big role on defense this year. The 2014 Mavericks are looking very good on both sides of the football. This team is bound to be CIF Champions. The county will be shocked, but we won’t be.

“Don’t mess with the water polo team because we are tighter than our suits.”

Not sure who said this but it certainly applies to this year’s LCC Varsity Boys Water Polo Team. Don’t be fooled by this year’s team. They might be friendly on the pool deck, but they are fierce competitors in the water.

The three senior captains are Cole Carroll, Evan Reider, and Jarrett Simmons. Six other seniors on this year’s Varsity roster include Kevin Burke, Ryan Clancy, Matt Conger, Nick Drury, Grant Gicking, Matt Goldstein, and Nathan Haman. The juniors on the team include Matt Lawson and Griffin O’Malley. The two sophomores rounding out the roster include Blake Brown and Hayden Reider. The JV and Novice teams also include a number of talented athletes.

The coaches leading the team this year include John Spann (Varsity), James Smith (JV), and Laura Brown (N). Senior, Hunter Phillips is also on deck helping the coaches. This team is intent on a winning season and looking forward to CIF. Go Mavs!
